Get Smart (PG-13, Comedy) B
A new agent (Steve Carell) and his much more experienced partner (Anne Hathaway) search for some nuclear bombs that have been stolen. The film had a good story and it was entertaining even though it could have been much funnier. Official Site
Ghost Rider (PG-13, Action) B
A man (Nicolas Cage) gets tricked into a deal by the devil to become his bounty hunter. As the devil’s bounty hunter he gets special powers that turn him into a flaming skeleton. The story was good and the special effects were great but the devil was made too look so evil that he just seems comical. Official Site
The Golden Compass (PG-13, Fantasy, Action) A-
In a world were every person has a talking animal as a companion and its spirit, a young girl discovers that it is up to her to save a group of children whose companions are being forcibly removed from them. There’s a lot more to the premise for the movie that would be more fun to just see in the film than to read here. Official Site
Gone Baby Gone (R, Drama) B+
A young detective and his girlfriend work together with the police to find a girl that has been kidnapped. The police aren’t too happy too work with him but the police chief (Morgan Freeman) assigns two detectives to assist him. The police benefit from the detectives work since he can deal with people outside the law which the police apparently can’t do. Official Site
Good Luck Chuck (R, Comedy) B+
Chuck (Dane Cook) seems to be a lucky charm for women seeking marriage, all they have to do is sleep with him once which leads to find their true love. When Chuck finally meets the right woman (Jessica Alba) he can’t have sex with her until he frees himslef of the “curse”. All the main characters were funny but Jessica Alba did an especially good job. Official Site
The Good Shepherd (R, Drama/Suspense) C+
This movie is advertised as the story of how the CIA was created. It seemed to me that only five to ten minutes of the movie dealt with this. Matt Damon plays a young man tapped into the CIA that becomes estranged from his wife because of his job, the movie also seems to do a little fuzzy history on the Bay of Pigs invasion in Cuba. Official Site
A Good Year (PG-13, Drama) A-
A cold hearted banker (Russell Crowe) inherits a property from his uncle so he travels to France. When he is there he starts remembering moments from his childhood and learns some things about himself. The film moves along very nicely and never stalls on a particular point of the story as other movies have done. Official Site
Goya’s Ghost (R, Drama) B+
Set during the Spanish inquisition a respected painter tries to secure the release of a young woman (Natalie Portman) that has been taken by the Spanish inquisition. This movie does a great job of showing the injustices of the time while providing an interesting story and characters. I just wish the movie had been in Spanish with English subtitles instead of all the characters speaking in English with a Spanish accent. Official Site
Gracie (PG-13, Drama) B
This is the true story of a girl that was determined to play soccer in the men’s high school team. I didn’t think some of the acting was very good and while it is a true story it is still a familiar one. Official Site
The Great Debaters (PG-13, Drama) A-
This movie is based on a true story set in the 1930’s about a small African American college in Texas were professor Melvin Tolson (Denzel Washington) formed a debating team that became so good it was able to compete with the best Colleges while dealing with racial discrimination. Official Site
Gridiron Gang (PG-13 - Drama) B+
This is the true story of a football program that was started in a juvenile camp to encourage kids to leave their life of crimes and gangs. Dwayne (The Rock) Johnson plays the part of real life head coach Sean Porter; he can be seen during the credits. This is the best movie Dwayne Johnson has made so far.
The Grindhouse (R, Horror, Action) C+
This movie has two movies back to back in an effort to relive a night at movie theatres that featured cheap horror movies. The aspect of actually feeling like you are at a “Grindhouse” was actually very good. The first movie is a zombie movie that was pretty good while the second one is about a man Kurt Rusell that likes to murder women by using his car. Except for a great car chase I didn’t care for the second movie too much. Official Site
The Grudge 2 (PG-13, Horror) C+
Sarah Michelle Gellar returns for this second version of what was a good film. The plot is the same as in the first movie were some spirits chase down people who visit their abandoned apartment. Nothing new is offered in this film, just more scary moments which aren’t bad except I had already seen them in the trailer. Official Site
The Guardian (PG-13 - Action, Drama) B
Kevin Costner is a Coast Guard rescue swimmer that is assigned to teach new swimmers at a Coast Guard academy. This movie gave an excellent insight into the important job Coast Guard rescue swimmers do. It consists mainly of the training the cadets receive, a couple of love stories and a few action scenes were people are rescued from the ocean. Official Site
Hairspray (PG, Musical, Comedy) A-
A musical set in the early 60’s were a girl want to get on a T V dance show while at the same time advancing the fight against racism. I didn’t think I would enjoy seeing John Travolta playing a woman but the music and story were excellent. Official Site

Hancock (PG-13, Comedy, Action) B+
Hancock (Will Smith) has Superman like powers but every time he saves someone he ends up causing more damage and just relating very badly to the public. A PR agent (Jason Bateman) attempts to help him improve his image despite the fact that his wife (Charlize Theron) doesn’t care for Hancock. There’s a bit more to the story which makes the movie more parallel to real life. Unlike the usual superhero movies there is no substantial bad guy; instead the movie focuses on Hancock’s personal life. Official Site
The Happening (R, Mystery) C
Mark Wahlberg stars as a science teacher in M. Night Shyamalan’s latest movie. An event is occurring that is causing people to escape the city. The problem with this movie is that the event just keeps happening and happening, it’s one long constant set up that isn’t worth it at the end. When this movie was advertised The Sixth Sense and Signs were advertised as previous movies by him, I don’t think they’ll be citing this movie in the future. Official Site
Happy Feet (PG, Animated, Musical) A-
A penguin becomes an outcast because he is born without a singing voice, his only talent is to dance. The fact that there is a shortage of fish to eat doesn’t help his situation either. The animation and music in this movie were excellent. Official Site
Harold and Kumar: Escape from Guantanamo Bay (R, Comedy) D-
In this sequel after escaping Guantanamo Bay Harold and Kumar sneak back into the U.S. in order to reach a friend that will help them prove they’re not terrorists and therefore be able to travel to Amsterdam so that Harold can find his girlfriend. The first movie was much better than this sequel that lacked a substantial story and was just full of bad recycled jokes. Official Site
Harsh Times (R, Drama, Action í) B
A former soldier (Christian Bale) tries to get a job as a police officer while he drives around with his buddy doing drugs and getting into all kinds of trouble. The main character's twisted sense of right vs. wrong made this movie very entertaining. Official Site
Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (PG-13, Adventure) A
Once more Harry goes back to another school year but this time he has to face various external challenges that not only affect him but also his school and friends. This is the movie that has had the most action and events in it. Official Site
The Heartbreak Kid (R, Comedy) C
Ben Stiller plays the role of Eddie Cantrow an almost 40 year old guy that is feeling the pressure of being single from friends and family. He then marries the first girl he meets but finds out that she has a few habits he can’t live with. During their honeymoon he meets another woman he actually likes which puts him in a tough situation. The funniest (probably the only ones) parts of this movie were shown in the trailer. Ben Stiller is always entertaining but he needs to do a better job in picking his roles and films. Official Site
Hellboy 2 (PG-13, Action, Fantasy) C+
An Elf decided to break a truce that was set up with the humans thousands of years ago so Hellboy and the rest of the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Development have to stop him. The special effects and all the different creatures were excellent. Unfortunately the movie is overloaded with too many sub plots that seem to overtake the main story line. There is also a scene were two of the main characters sing that should have been cut out of the movie. Official Site
The Hitcher (R, Suspense, Thriller) B-
In this movie a couple picks up a hitchhiker that turns out to be a really bad guy. This movie was very suspenseful and frustrating since the two college kids just kept making the worst decisions possible. Official Site
Hitman (R, Action) C-
When I went to see this movie all I knew was that it was based on a man that was raised as a kid to be a hitman. In this story it turns out that he has become the target but we only learn this after being bored for a while and then the explanation of why he has been targeted is too convoluted the movie also failed to explain who the hitman was and where he came from. I got the impression that he worked for the church to only kill bad guys. The movie is based on a video game so maybe all the character development is in there. Official Site
The Hoax (R, Drama) B+
Richard Gere plays Clifford Irving a man who in the early 70’s fooled a major publishing company into thinking he had the exclusive rights to write Howard Hughes’ autobiography. Most of the actors in this movie were excellent and the story was very interesting. I’m not sure every detail was entirely true. Official Site
Hors de Prix – Priceless (PG-13, Romantic Comedy) B
In this French film Jean (Gad Elmaleh) meets Irene (Audrey Tautou) who mistakes him for a rich man. When she finds out he is not rich she leaves him but he’s still determined to pursue her no matter what the cost. The story was an original one but it felt a bit drawn out at times. Official Site

In order to save them from harm Horton has to make a long journey to a mountain top where the speck will always be safe. While Horton is trying to save the city its Mayor has his own troubles trying to warn the city of the possible danger. The music and screenplay were excellent, there was never a dull moment. Hot Fuzz (R, Comedy, Action) B+
In London a police officer is so good that he makes the rest of the police department look good so he gets sent out to a small town where people are being murdered but nobody wants to believe it. Most of the humor in this movie rests with the unusual situation and on the main character. Official Site

How to Eat Fried Worms (PG - Comedy) B+
A boy in a new school unwillingly bets the local bully that he can eat 10 worms. This movie is not nearly as gross as it would seem to be and is in fact pretty good.
The Holiday (PG-13, Comedy/Romance) D+?
Two women living thousands of miles apart who can’t meet the right guy decide to exchange homes to take a break from the dating scene but once they exchange homes things start to happen. There was too much moping in this movie for me and it was pretty clear what the final outcome was going to be. I had trouble staying awake during this movie. Official Site
Hollywoodland (R - Drama) B
Ben Affleck plays the part of George Reeves who was TV’s Superman in the 1950’s. In the movie Adrien Brody is a private detective that believes George Reeves did not commit suicide but was murdered instead. Other great actors in this film included Diane Lane and Bob Hoskins. The movie was very well made and it gives a good understanding of the controversy at the time.
The House Bunny (PG-13, Comedy) C+
After being thrown out of the Playboy Mansion Shelly becomes a house mother at a Sorority house were the girls are having trouble getting new pledges. There were some funny moments but not enough to make the movie worthwhile. Official Site

This Brazilian movie is set in the Sand Dunes of Maranhão in the year 1910. A man forces his pregnant wife and her mother to live in a desolate area where they learn (or try to) make a new life. How to Lose Friends and Alienate People (R, Comedy) B
A self proclaimed journalist in Britain gets a offered a position at a major magazine in New York City were he hopes to be very successful, the only problem is he doesn’t have the best social skills. The movie wasn’t that funny but the story was pretty good thanks to an aspect that involves Kirsten Dunst’s character. Official Site
The Hunting Party (R, Action, Comedy) C+
Richard Gere plays a War correspondent that is trying to find and capture a former dictator in a European country with the help of his camera man and friend played by Terrence Howard. This movie is supposed to be funny but it really is a criticism of real life events which doesn’t make the film too funny. There wasn’t too much action either but the story regarding Richard Gere’s character was an enterating one. Official Site
I Am Legend (PG-13, Thriller, Sci-Fi) B+
A scientist (Will Smith) and his dog are the only survivors of a virus that has wiped out New York City and turned some people into some of the scariest creatures I’ve ever seen at the movies. This movie had a couple of parts were the character does stuff that a sane person wouldn’t do or fall for; perhaps it was too much suspense for me. Official Site
Idlewild (R - Drama, Musical) B
Set in the 1930’s a couple of men working in a club get involved with the local mob guy while their personal lives are also in disarray. The biggest grievance I have with this film is that they each had an animated character show up at times. The music and dancing were good.
The Incredible Hulk (PG-13, Action, Sci-Fi) A-
Bruce Banner (Ed Norton) seeks a cure for the gamma radiation that turns him into the Hulk while still hiding from the military that wants to harness is power. Liv Tyler plays his girlfriend and William Hurt plays the general that is chasing him down, their characters contribute significantly to the overall story that does an excellent task carrying all the great action in this movie. Official Site
Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of Crystal Skull (PG, Action, Adventure) B
Set in the 1950’s Indiana Jones (Harrison Ford) goes back into action one more time when he is drawn into the search for a lost gold city. A Soviet agent (Cate Blanchett) who is also after the same treasure keeps causing trouble for him and his friends. The action scenes were excellent and the story was good even though it seemed sort of generic; I was expecting something more elaborate. Shia LaBeouf who joins Indy as his new sidekick does a good job but not nearly as good as Harrison Ford and Sean Connery in the previous movie. Official Site
I Now Pronounce you Chuck and Larry (PG-13, Comedy) C+
Adam Sandler and Kevin James pretend to be a gay couple in order to receive a pension benefit. There were some funny parts but it seems like this movie was pieced together in parts, the plot stops moving along for a long time while we get to see them pretend to be a gay couple, then it suddenly reaches the climax and just about as suddenly the movie ends. In Bruges (R, Comedy) A-
A couple of hit men decide to do tour a small city in Belgium where they’ve been laying low. Jason Statham plays a farmer whose family is attacked by creatures that are being controlled by an evil sorcerer (Ray Liotta) who also wants to replace the king (Burt Reynolds) with his own appointee. The problem with the movie is that none of the characters seem to take all their impending danger to seriously, everything is a big joke. A man (Hayden Christensen) finds out he has the ability to teleport to any part of the world and later finds out that there are more people like him and an entire organization that is hunting people like him down.
